Oldest active hire dates

Unread post by Ypsi »

With the post of an engineer making his last run today on the Pete Marquette, it got me to think of a quick and interesting question, who knows a railroader with the oldest hire on date still working? 1966 is quite a while ago (hire date according to the TLU thread for CSX), and I was interested to see if anyone else knew of railroads with old hire on dates. Im not looking for names, but just years and maybe what railroad they hired on with. It would be interesting to hear of PC/ NYC and the likes still going at it and the likes.

I've been told Rich on the PM is the highest seniority T&E employee on Amtrak, and maybe even the entire company including office staff. He had a few fellow "old heads" who retired recently as well.

There's a story in the September issue of Trains Magazine about Pete Hypes. He hired out on the Virginian on August 5, 1956. He's still working 60 years late and has no intent of retiring. Worked his way up from call boy to yardmaster. 60 years and two railroads late he's still going strong.

Although she recently retired GLC had a young lady (Jan Snell?) who worked for the AA/MIRY/TSBY for 60 or 70 years.

Happy 60th anniversary to Pete Hypes. No, that was not a typo. Pete, a yardmaster at our Elmore Yard in Mullens, W.Va., began his career with the Virginian Railway on August 5, 1956, and has since maintained a spotless safety record. We are proud to have Pete as part of our family. Check out the September issue of Trains Magazine to read all about Pete's railroad career.

Wasn't there a guy who worked for Amtrak as a dispatcher or something in the NE that was in his late 80's or 90's that had worked for 70 years?

That Pete Hypes for NS is amazing. To put that into perspective, he saw the last Virginian steamers operate in 1957 and the end of the N&W steam in 1960. NKP, GTW, UP and countless other Class 1's that ended regular steam operations.

Oh the stories he must have...

If the Pete guy is mho I think it is, he has 6 or 7 ex wifes, and he is trying to hold out to prevent them from drawing from his retirement fund, or at least that was the sand box rumor for a few years ago.
