Ann Arbor dock repair photos

Unread post by Steve B »

These were taken in 1961 at Elberta by my grandfather F.M. Burns. They give an idea of how much labor was required to keep the ferry operation going. East slip maybe? Not a hardhat in sight.

So many photos focus on trains. It's always interesting to see the behind the scenes so to speak of railroad works.

No hard hats. No safety glasses, No personal fall arrest. No life jackets. Step ladder used incorrectly. Crane hook doesn't have a safety latch. No high visibility clothing. I bet they didn't do a site specific safety plan, daily job hazard analysis or a lift plan for the crane.

PatAzo, good call on pointing out those other dangers. When the Mackinac Bridge was built they used hardhats. I suppose their use started with the really big jobs, and it took a while for the practice to trickle down to stuff like this. My grandfather was a supervisor on this dock repair. Nowadays, instead of taking pictures I'm sure he'd just focus on safety. Back then? Eh, looks like they've got it under control!

Safety Is No Accident...thusly no accident then I will assume that is was safe enough.
And when the world was balck and white what would HIGH VISABILITY be? A whiter strait jacket?
Nice pics though. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for posting them.
