Looking through some old pics, I forgot I had one showing that lead...

Wow the lead was still in for CSX. I bet it went no where by the time you took this.

It ran across the acess drive and then stopped after a carlength or two. As previously mentioned, maybe a car might be setout there or MoW equipment stashed.

The "NYC Transfer Track", as it was known, shown in JT's picture was there until about 2-3 years ago. Only ever saw MOW equipment parked on it.

At the far west end of the transfer track was a load-out where Brinks Wood Products got hopper cars of colored wood chips. I missed a chance to take a photo one day when a switcher was spotting one of those hoppers.

If the load-out dropped the material thru the ties and into a pit, MOW used it to unload occasional cars of stone for small projects.

Not a map but a list in Michigan Railroads Lines that shows when each section of track was built, changed hands and if abandoned when.

Ahhh. I wonder if it was a mining spur. A lot of old mines in the area.

Just rode the Kent from 44th to Byron Center. Got me wondering, how bad was the ROW in the 90's before the trail was being built? There are hardly any raileoad related items laying along the ROW. Ive found a busted whistle post before the trestle heading south toeards 72nd St, two ten foot sections of 110 lb rail and only a handful of tie remnents. Did the trail prep involve removing a lot. Of stuff left behind by the railroad? South of Prairie there is a signal base on the West side of the ROW, was this line ever signalized?

According to my friend the late Bill Pontius, ( he was the agent in Allegan in the late 1960's). At that time, the local out of Kazoo went as far north as Byron Center. Then would turn back. The late Russell Thomas, was the regular engineer on that run, and Bills dog would board the engine at Allegan for the ride up to B.C. and back. According to Bill, the last run up to B.C. was around 1974 or so. At that time, the brush along the R.O.W. was so bad, the returning southbound had tree branches stuck in the railings of the engine on it's way back.
