I'd disagree on the Old Road being simply redundant after the New Main from Toledo to Elkhart was put in. If that were the case, it wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. It had far greater traffic, both thru and local, than most realize and certainly had a greater local customer base than the MC Airline (one of the supposed reasons that the Airline didn't last, lack of originated traffic). The Old Road also was a very good detour route when trouble occured on the e/w main. It seems like the NYC had a habit on many areas of the system of cutting thru routes in unusual places to force the abandonment of routes and cutting the Old Road where they did was certainly one of these.
