Huge, huge, huge loss for the sport.
Yes from a historical standpoint but from a current activity standpoint he hasn’t been actively involved in the sport since selling his team in the late 90s.

At any rate huge loss. One of the toughest guys to ever drive a race car. They definitely don’t make them like him anymore. He’s also the source of 2 of my favorite NASCAR stories.

He would make engine sounds while racing. I first hear that story on a podcast. I believe it was Ken Squire on Dale Jr’s podcast (also RIP).

Then there’s the 1983 Daytona 500 when he flipped his car in Qualifying and the team didn’t have a spare so they found a display car at a local Hardee’s (his sponsor at the time) and went on to win the race in a display car. That’s an incredible story.

Oh yeah and the whole 1979 Daytona 500 last lap crash and fight with Donnie Allison but that’s been talked about to death.
