The Legacy Trail

Unread post by hoborich »

Rode the Legacy Trail in Venice Florida today. It's built on the roadbed of the old Seaboard Airline Railroad. It's a beautiful trail, on a hard surfaced roadbed. How is this railroad related you may ask? The area was originally developed by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers as a retirement community for it's members. Developers quickly followed.
In the 1920s, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers began developing the City of Venice during the great Florida land boom. The BLE dredged the pass and surrounding Bayfront and created filled shorelines with the spoil south of the pass. However, by the end of the 1920s the great land boom had ended and all work stopped on the City of Venice and the Pass.
