Looks like GE is dumping their locomotive business.

I think this is going to be an interesting situation. I would assume someone is going to buy this division (Siemens maybe?), and I would assume National Railway Equipment (NREX), and others, will take over the rebuilding programs. We'll have to see how it turns out.NSSD70ACe wrote:http://money.cnn.com/2017/11/14/investi ... index.html

Re: There goes GE...
I'd think Siemens would be high up in the running, but they're busy taking over Alstom. I hope that it isn't that Chinese Rail company that's slowly eating everything. There's any number of international conglomerates that could take it over. I don't think it'd really go off on its own, a business like that needs a much larger parent to sustain it for R&D and such when times, like right now, are rough. That's why EMD is likely going to be much better, in the long-term, under CAT than all by itself.csxcw46ah677 wrote:I think this is going to be an interesting situation. Re: There goes GE...
For a while, at least, wasn't one of the big selling points for buying locomotives from GE that they seamlessly financed purchases through GE Capital?
If that feature were to go away, I wonder how it would affect the product line under new owners?

For a company that built it's reputation on manufacturing hard goods they sure are trying hard to get out of that market. Says a lot about where Wall street and the US is heading, make nothing and earn your money by passing money from one pocket to another.

General Electric used to be a $60 dollar stock! Today it is $18 dollars. The company has lost two thirds of it's value!!!!!

Good job being ignorant of how stock prices work.hoborich wrote:General Electric used to be a $60 dollar stock! Today it is $18 dollars. The company has lost two thirds of it's value!!!!!
Long story short: stock splits, buybacks, market cap, and a host of other things.
The actual stock price has little to do with the value of the company over time.
Re: There goes GE...
The fact remains kid, that GE stock has been on a downhill slide for quite a while.
By the way, I was in the stock market before you were born. Caught four splits on Dell stock back in the 80s and 90s, when Dell was hot..

I don’t think age has anything to do with your display of disdain for stock market operations when it doesn’t help your potshot.hoborich wrote:The fact remains kid, that GE stock has been on a downhill slide for quite a while.

Re: There goes GE...
GE hasn't split since 2000 so that doesn't account for the drop in share price. They are in the midst of a buy back to reduce their outstanding shares 20%. In theory a buy back should lead to an increase in share price but it's primarily a way to pay investors. It's being financed with the sale of assets. GE's real problem is earnings. They have been down for some time. With the decline in share price GE's market cap is down s well. The company has indeed lost value. If the share price rebounds that will be a gain.
