Two come to mind:

Back when CSX move all the dispatching to Jacksonville, the first day or two, things didn't always work quite as well as hoped. The first night, the increasingly frustrated dispatcher was trying to get signals lined up for a movement through Lansing, and finally told the crew with his Southern drawl, "I hope you boys brought a big lunch..."

Also years ago in Michigan City, got invited up into the cab of South Shore freight that was waiting for a meet. The engineer was showing us how things worked, and while demonstrating the radio briefly switched over the the Conrail freq, keyed the mic, and simply said "BOOGER" - This is even funnier if you remember Johnny Fever getting fired for this on the show WKRP.

So sassy

Later, laughing over the radio. "81.7?? You guys have to tell me, like I can't make it up for you. Figure it out."

Amtrak cascades conductor.
"517 is running 2 hours late, so meet will be (between two places I don't remember)
Engineer. "Well alright"
Conductor "number 7 got into Seattle about an hour ago" ( 9 hours late)
Engineer "what's going on eh?"
Conductor. (A whitebeard might I add) "it's just another day"
Conductor knows how amtrak really works!

I got to know two GLC guys while they put together their train in Owosso. When they left, I first caught them at the Steam Railroading Institute, and then stopped for gas and caught them in Ashley. Conductor goes, "And here he is!"

On the SMRS there is a property just North of the Dear Point development that has a lot of interesting junk rotting away under tarps. One such tarp has a shovel leaning on it that has been there for years that has spelled out "pooper scooper" written in stick on letters.

Certain SMRS brakemen while shoving south and calling length to crossings have been known to call "pooper scooper 75 pooper scooper" instead of 5 cars.

"We have a slight problem with this power. My math says we are good for 8100 tons and we are 8175 tons out of here -over."

"Computer say that power is good for 9100 tons-over." ~Yardmaster

"Computer says that? Then I need time and initials-over" ~crew

"IBM at 1203-over"~Yardmaster

"Alright, IBM at 1203" <obviously not catching the reference>

Power was good for 9100 tons. They were confusing types, or forgot to carry a 1.

Not scanner chatter, but it came close enough. The crew on CN's L521 died on the law at Pavilion today, right in front of me. Soon enough, the new crew arrived. In a Lincoln towncar. Needless to say, the conductor on board had a few words about that
