Holland, MI

Postby Jochs on Thu Aug 02, 2012 9:21 pm

Is Holland, MI in Ottawa County entirely or does it extend into Allegan County? Looking at the map, most of it is north of Ottagan Road, but some of it is South. I've seen Holland City Limit signs in Allegan County, but I would think the city would be in one county, not two. And you can't trust everything you read, as the Macatawa River near Waverly is labeled as the Black River on US 31.

Looks like everything south of 32nd is in Allegan County. Village of Casnovia is half in Muskegon and half in Kent

That's because the river that runs under 31 and along the south side of Wyoming yard IS the Black River. I've never seen any signage that states it to be the Macatawa River. Even the sign on Chicago Dr. has "Black River" on it. Where have you seen Macatawa River?

According to this site, Lake Macatawa was formerly named Black Lake. It appears they kept the name Black River after renaming the lake. http://holland.org/locations/387-holland-history

I thought sometime back in the 70's Ottawa Co. tried to buy the south end of Holland from Allegan Co. but was unsuccessful, but Holland does straddle the county line.

Thanks for the info guys. :)

My gazetteer shows the Macatawa River going toward Holland, but there is also an unnamed River going toward Holland into it.

Don't you mean Waverly Yard?
Maybe MDOT couldn't spell "Macatawa" so they decided to keep it Black  I know for awhile they couldn't spell "Bridgman" on I-94...spelling it "Bridgeman." BTW, there is also a Black River that runs into South Haven.

Yes, yes...Waverly. My fingers were thinking one thing and my brain another.

By the way, every time I see "Bridgman" while on 94, I automatically think to pronounce it like "brid-g-man" (three syllables). It just looks weird without the "e."

And speaking of 94, have you see the Amtrak billboard on westbound 94 just past the first business loop exit ramp (just west of 196)? I think there's another one by Brid-g-man, too. The Amtrak photo they used looks really familar...I feel like I've seen or been to that location.
