M-28 over the Presque River, East of Wakefield. I looked here earlier today but somehow passed over it.Michael wrote:
Originally built as an extention of the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic Railway, then the Soo Line, Wisconsin Central, and now the CN.

Re: Where Is It?
Yes, it's the M-28 bridge and the CN White Pine Sub bridge over the Presque Isle River, northeast of Wakefield, Wakefield-Marenisco School District, Wakefield Township, Gogebic County, in the western UP. Looking south. Its have a Wakefield, MI 49068 address. The engineer and conductor of the CN White Pine local freight train are based out of North Bessemer, MI. The google street view map show there is a bungalow and a crew office shanty with two vehicles parked close by on the east side of County Highway 513 in North Bessemer.Pixl wrote:M-28 over the Presque River, East of Wakefield. That train above is somewhere on the CSX Saginaw Sub on its way to New Boston.PatAzo wrote:If you know your West Michigan territory, this one is easy.

It kind of looks like CN...which would put it on the South Bend Sub...?PatAzo wrote:West Michigan.railrod1949 wrote:PatAzo wrote:If you know your West Michigan territory, this one is easy.

Looks like the former Norfolk Southern Kalamazoo branch, somewhere in between Elkhart and Kalamazoo.

Not just west of Battle Creek, but west. Visual clues: 1) The difference in the two tracks. 2) Signal in the distance. 3) The guard rail in the foreground.AARR wrote:Just west of Battle Creek?

Yes, that's at 51998 Sheldon Creek Road, Marcellus, MI 49067, in the Marcellus Community Schools district, Marcellus Township, Cass County. About a mile northeast of Marcellus, on the CN South Bend Sub. Why a CSX engine instead of a CN locomotive?~Z~ wrote:51998 Sheldon Creek Rd, Marcellus, MichiganPatAzo wrote:If you know your West Michigan territory, this one is easy.

Re: Where Is It?
I don't think empty vehicle racks are heavy. These modern engines can pull a very long string of empty cars and some pretty impressive loaded ones too.

I've seen many 90 car empty rack trains with one unit thru Wyandotte. It also looks like a long train to have just one engine.

Re: Where Is It?
Racks themselves run around 45 tons apiece, and they only can carry so many cars, usually not more than 18 or so depending on configuration and cargo, so really the autos themselves aren't adding more than 50 tons or so. So most max out around 95 tons, give or take, loaded.hoborich wrote:I've seen many 90 car empty rack trains with one unit thru Wyandotte. It also looks like a long train to have just one engine.
Compare that to a coal train where 110 tons of the weight of a fully loaded car is coal, and 33 more tons of railcar.
According to that math, a 90-car autorack train should be about 8550 tons, while a loaded coal train also of 90 cars would be around 12,600 tons. Given that many autorack trains run shorter than that, it is totally normal to run trains across, say the Waterlevel or on the GTW with only one unit.
Hence I've heard that running empty racks isn't much fun because of the lightweight and small wheels, which don't lend themselves to much braking power and you've also got those specialized slack pistons which cause more grief in train-handling unloaded.
