'Rare' rolling stock stories

Unread post by ThatRailfanningKid »

Thought i'd start a thread for sharing memorable sightings over the years- whether it be old, new, rare or just out of place. Feel free to add pictures if you'd like. To start, I'll share a couple of mine:

In May 2009, i was on a trip to DC, I glimpsed an Acela train going about 130 through Baltimore, with a NYC observation car trailing.

The same summer, i was hanging out at Durand Union Station when a UP armour yellow E or F unit lead a CN consist EB.

In the Summer of 2012, I was at the East Lansing Amtrak Station when a passenger train went through with a GE Dash-8 trailing.

My favorite has to be when I caught Cascades NPCU 90230 leading and phase IV P32-8 #511 pushing on 353 back in 09 I believe it was.

My third and forth were on a trip to St. Paul in 2008, I shot a bandit on the way out

I saw a PC covered hopper car come through Ames, IA two or three weeks ago along with a D&H covered hopper car on another train. Plenty of un-patched C&NW, D&RGW, SP, and MP cars come through as well.

Well lets see, around 1991 there was a Q635 parked at Keller in Tiffin, Oh dropping cars off for the then Indiana Hi-Rail, that had two CF-7s on the rear of the train. I believe they were lettered for Reading Blue Mountain and Northern. One had a Topeka cab and the other had the older round top cab. The train sat for hours and this being the 90's and me being a curious tweener I checked them over quite well inside and out. They were the first dead in tow locos I had ever seen before or since that were not behind the consist. And the cabs were not locked to boot.

About the same time frame and place a Westinghouse Schable car and caboose would trip the hotbox heading East in Bascom. CSX was gracious enough to set it out for my inspection each time.

A few Thrall all door box cars would also come into the Indiana Hi-Rail occasionally full of particle board destined for the local Amariwood factory. Apparently the factory hated these cars as the doors would not line up with their docks and had to be unloaded by ramps and forktrucks outside in the parking lot.

In the winter of 1999-2000 IIRC I was working at a sawmill in Belgrade Montana. I was walking the outside of the mill and looked over at the chip load out. To my surprise and delight, a Great Northern chip car (think hi-cube gondola) was spotted for loading. The car was in original Big Sky Blue paint scheme looked remarkably good for a 30 year old car.

Can confirm that it was a real life bandit, although the tags have apparently make it a model railroad video :D

Saw an EX New York Central steel coil car on 38 E not too long ago.
And like RO, I saw an ex pillsbury hopper on a CP train not long ago, it was in much better condition than his.
On the way into penn station, there was an amtrak sleeper still in faded phase II or III before phase III was a thing again.
Other than that, not anything that piques my interest
