Gallery / Voting changes

Have a couple of new changes coming up on railroadfan.com:

1. I'm modifying how the process works for the Picture of the Month/Year.

Here's a guide on how to vote for your favorite photos:
a. Go to this link to access the gallery: http://www.railroadfan.com/gallery

b. (Click on the thumbnail to open the full sized picture) Click on these links circled in red:

2. Another major annoucement about the photo gallery. Upon switching hosts to this newer, faster, more reliable service, with the increase costs actually came a smaller amount of room to store all of the photos. We are currently running at 90% capacity. Unfortunately, I need to start limiting the amount of disk space that is being taken up by members photos. There are currently 25 members that are over the size limit that I would like to put in place (100 MB.) Please use this link to see how much space is being used: http://www.railroadfan.com/gallery/user ... ort=name_a
This shows each member of the board, listed in alphabetical order. The max that is being allowed is 100000KB.
What I'd like to see is if members can start removing photos from their albums that are not linked to trip reports, and any other pictures that you can remove to get down to no more than 100 MB. I will be setting that 100 MB quota in place starting on May 7th.
If you are looking for a place to store all of your odds and ends railroad photos that won't fit in this gallery, I'd recommend Tim's rrpicturearchive.net site. You can then remove link pictures from there over to this message board as many people have been doing for quite some time.
When the gallery was first put in place, I never imagined it would grow to the huge size that it's up to. I do thank all of you that have submitted photos, and am sorry that this new limit needs to be put in place. In order for the community and message board to grow, this change needs to take place. Either PM me or email me with any questions.

I think it will work, and I do like having an easy way to see the former winners. The picture of the month/year votes on the old system were fun to follow, though. Could that still be done in the new system? Even the old way, it would just be 13 polls to organize per year, which is a lot less than one per day/week/month/year (430  thanks, scooterb!)

Couple of questions:

1. How do I transfer previously uploaded shots to the new user voted best pictures file?

2. If I do that, will a copy be retained in my folder?

3. For new uploades that I want to have as part of the voting process, can I upload to both that folder and my own?

Thanks for all the work you have done with this!

1. How do I transfer previously uploaded shots to the new user voted best pictures file?
If you want to transfer it and not keep a copy of it in your old album, go to your gallery and click on the photo that you'd like to transfer. Just below the description of the folder, there is a "edit file information" button.
On that screen, there is an "Album" area. Click the down arrow, and select which album you want to move it to, in this case, "User Voted Best Pictures < Daily Submissions"

2. If I do that, will a copy be retained in my folder?
If you do that, no, it won't keep a copy in your gallery. If you want to duplicate it, just reupload the picture to this new User Voted Best Pictures area.

3. For new uploades that I want to have as part of the voting process, can I upload to both that folder and my own?
Yes, you can upload one picture to each your gallery and to the voting process one. If your picture isn't chosen as a top photo for the day, I'll remove it, but I'll leave the one in your personal gallery.

Is there a way to delete a folder and its contents so that you don't have to delete individual files?

Wanted to say a big thank you to those few that are working hard to clear up their photo galleries to get below the 100 MB mark. Here's a list of those who are still over that limit, and that I'd like to see the gallery sizes decreased soon. If you have any pictures that have won picture of the day/week/month, let me know and I'll move those to the new User Voted Best Pictures area.

I got all of my pics off of the gallery and I put them into a new site that I created trainman86.webs.com I know I had a lot of odds and ends and some of my pics were not the best so I tossed those as well as took them off the gallery. That should get you some more disk space Zack. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help Justin. Also, I move the best pictures from the User Voted Best Pictures area into the April winners, and removed the non-winners. You can see the albums here: http://www.railroadfan.com/gallery/index.php?cat=13

Also, remember that Wednesday May 7th(tomorrow) is when I'm putting the 100MB(100,000KB) cap on photos per member in the gallery. If you are over that limit, your existing photos won't be removed yet, but you will not be able to upload any additional ones. Please go through your photos and remove what you can to get down below 100MB.

Where can you find out how much space you are taking up, and when you've gotten below the 100MB limit? I've already reduce my number of files by about half, but would like to know how many more I have to go.

Thanks Zack.

Here's a link to page 15 in the alphabetical order with your current total on it: http://www.railroadfan.com/gallery/user ... ort=name_a

Looks like it's at 244866 KB, so a bit more trimming, sorry :(

No problem. I understand the need for the size limit. Just trying to figure out how far back into the moldie oldies I need to cut.

Thanks again Zack.
