CN Pontiac Yard, December 2023

Unread post by Beemer »

A couple cell phone shots of a Cotton Belt Box Car taken on 12/11/23 and an older GT loco, 4906, taken on 12/15/23.

I haven't seen the blue and orange locos around in a while.

Enjoy Your Day,

I think that boxcar is used in Chrysler (or whatever it's called now) parts service to the warehouse in Mt. Clemens.

It's odd that sometimes those boxcars are delivered to the local in Pontiac and others the one in Port Huron.

The Chrysler cars have not come out of Port Huron for a long time now. Strictly out of Pontiac. The L533 local out of PH only handles Carter Lumber and B&D Drywall now. L515 out of Pontiac handles DCON interchange, Conrail interchange, Nolan Distribution, CJ Link Lumber, CN Cargoflow/PolyTerm, GLR Recycling, Phoenix Stone and Chrysler.

TY for the update. Can L515 finish with one crew? That seems like a lot of work.

I don't believe L515 services all of the above every day.

You’re correct. Chrysler and Nolan are probably daily. DCON, CR, GLR and Polyterm several times a week and the others as-needed.

Chrysler, Nolan and Polyterm are switched Monday thru Friday. Occasionally, a 515 will be sent out on Saturday if Chrysler needs to be worked. DCON, generally 4 days a week (scrap metal is booming for them) and GLR has seen an uptick in business now that they are also handling scrap gons as well as baled paper - 2-3 days a week. CR interchange - as needed. Phoenix Stone is still a customer, although currently inactive. The switch frog has been removed with all other switch apparatus remaining. This reduces the cost that Phoenix has to pay to maintain the switch (read grinding) and can easily be restored when and if they choose to resume service. L515 will average around 30 cars for customers once they hit East Yard headed north - and that can swell to 50 or more on some days, with Nolan Distribution being the leader in car count.

Your welcome Don. Also, forgot to mention Hoover Treated Wood Products, which was receiving cars this past summer and fall. Also, I know that Cadillac Oil received at least 2 cars this year. Don't know much about them. Even when only the big 3 mentioned above are being switched, it's a long day for 515. They start out very early and often return to Pontiac quite late. Manistique often gives those times when they pass him on the Holly. They can also lose time when they are stuck in the hole in Mount Clemens for manifests.
