All-Nighter on the NS Chicago Line in Waterloo, IN

Unread post by Tier4GEVO »

On Friday, 3/31/2017 I made the trek down to Waterloo, IN with a friend for a solid night of railfanning into the early morning hours of Saturday, 4/1/2017. Waterloo is located at Milepost 367 along the NS Chicago Line and is a great location for night photography or videos. Up to 70 trains per day fly through this quaint town, and needless to say, I was quite impressed with what NS had to offer!

Excellent trip report! I love the way you document train ID's, locomotives and the times seen. Nice! I'll be doing another All-Nighter myself next month. Looking forward to it.

An all nighter at Waterloo is on my bucket list. I have stopped at Waterloo several times for a couple hours on my way back from Florida. Sleepy little town. I also see many of those trains on the Chesterton Railcams. They are free, if you have never tried them.

It's a nice spot for sure. And I've been watching them for years now. I remember years ago when the Fostoria coverage was from the bar next to the NS tracks near the diamond at Main Street.

Did you consider going a few miles east to Butler to watch? You could park at the library, and whenever something going west turns south onto the Wabash, or if one goes straight across the diamond, you can see them 3 blocks to the south going across Broadway St. Might not be able to see the loco numbers at night, but at least more activity to see.

I've visited there a few times. I like it but probably couldn't justify it at night as I prefer somewhere well-lit for both ease of viewing and video purposes.

I stopped in Waterloo for about 2 1/2 hours Wednesday night, on the way back from Florida. Saw 8 trains in 2 hours. Not bad. Ruled out an all nighter, cause I was tired from driving all day, and wanted to get some sleep. Anyone know what the trackspeed is through Waterloo. Most trains seemed to be doing 50 or more. One had five engines, another had four.

Yeah. The intermodals were really moving. Looked like around 60. I'll go back down there in the summer, when I have more time.
