TRRS 497: Union Pacific: a Chase across the Wyoming Desert

07 Jun 2016 - Wahsatch, UT

Early morning at the summit of the Wahsatch Grade yields an eastbound intermodal train, heading east towards Cheyenne and beyond. Moments later they're into Wyoming, and we found ourselves on a haphazard chase across the western Wyoming desert.

While not originally intended, we somehow kept pace with this train as we worked our way east filming for Union Pacific's Overland Route: America's Original Superhighway. We'd find them again at Granger, Wyoming, and then shortly thereafter at Green River. In the early afternoon, we'd run across them once more in Wamsutter, the only incorporated town in the desolate Great Divide Basin, the barren desert of western Wyoming.

With 167 intermodal units, the train is no slouch, removing those 167 trucks from the freeway in one shot, with only two crew members to boot! While the rails might run slower than the 80-mph I-80, they rocket ahead through the night, as train crews handoff to one another (while truckers must stop to sleep), keeping pace with the freeway - again thanks to the significant margin of efficiency held by the railroad.
