Northbound Grain Train Today

Unread post by atrainguy60 »

Coming into Holly this afternoon, we saw some grain cars slowly crossing Grange Hall Road heading north. Sooooo, deciding original plans could wait ten minutes or so, we went ahead of the train and got it at Newark :

Locomotives are not cheap, carting a multi million dollar asset around just in case is not very cost effective.
So...........why does CSX put three locos on an empty 87 car grain train, and two locos on a 130 car loaded coal train, faced with a steep grade along the route?

I can see it. Thanks for posting, atrain :) . These newer engines have fantastic pulling power and two can pull a loaded grain (or coal for that matter) train just time.
