Ep. 466: MMRR GP9 #24 Returns! Doubleheading on the GRE

Jan 21, 2016 - The 24 is back in action on the Grand Rapids Eastern Railroad!

After a year of dormancy due to mechanical faults, the venerable, longtime GRE power returned to service, with several doublehead runs with replacement power, the CFE 3885.

After a first run which saw the 24 unable to run for the entire day, this second run is where the 24 was fully utilized once more, helping the GRE move significant grain traffic to their biggest customer, King Milling in Lowell, MI.

Leading the 3885 and 6 empty grain cars on the west leg of the Lowell Turn, the 24 is looking good rounding the final curve of the day, dropping them down onto the bridge over the Grand River.

Thereafter, they'll be back home at Fuller Yard, where they can tie up for the day, ready to return tomorrow.

GRE Lowell Turn WB
Consist:
- MMRR 24 [GP9]
- CFE 3885 [GP38]
- 6 cars [Empties from King Milling]
Location/Time:
- GRE RR, GR, MI, Taylor St xing, on 1-21-16 at 12:55 EST

Hope you all got the pictures and videos of 24 that you wanted. I got word yesterday that she's been sold. I tried to keep her in west michigan, but that did not work out. I guess she's going to a new life at some papermill.

Please "Explain" more! Does anyone know where the "Papermill" is located? I hope this unit will stay here in Michigan! I only chased it once, with Dad (RCJ I), on 10-20-2005!

"CCRRAAPP!!!!!" Now, has it been moved yet? If not, when would it be expected to leave? Could it end up at Rougemere Yard? Would they keep the same paint and lettering?

I hope there'd be another chance to capture it in these colors!!!!

EWRice, will 24 still be in GR this Friday? I will be passing through town and wanted to take a few photos. Will it be parked in the yard around 5-6 p.m, or will it be in the engine house? Sad to hear she's leaving us.

Should still be there. Parked outside. Both were outside last night. You can't get a nice shoot w/o trespassing.

I believe it's in the house getting prepped to leave. The 3885 is outside, the 24 is no longer next to the engine house. I should see it on the interchange track when it's ready to leave.
