Ep. 416: Grand Rapids Eastern & Marquette Rail meet at Fuller Junction
Fuller Junction, on the west side of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is where CSX's former Pere Marquette GR-Baldwin mainline crosses Grand Rapids Eastern's former Grand Trunk Durand-Grand Haven Mainline.
Today, the GRE's western terminus is Fuller, and the tracks end in Lowell. To the west, they meet with the C&M just west of Fuller
CSX sold their interests north of Turner Street (just north of Fuller) to Marquette Rail in 2005, so MQT operates on CSX rails south to interchange on a daily basis, crossing over the GRE at Fuller
Over time, through mergers and acquisitions, GRE and MQT came to have the same parent company: Genesee & Wyoming.
Today, it is rare to see both roads in operation at the same time, with the GRE being a daytime tri-weekly affair and MQT's interchanging Z151 job being a nighttime train. However, in Summer 2014, we caught them both in operation, right here at Fuller.
