Ep. 353: Grand Rapids Eastern - Chase Lowell to Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids Eastern is a shortline railroad owned by Genesee and Wyoming. Formerly a RailAmerica road, and before that a RailTex company, the GRE operates over ex-Grand Trunk trackage from Walker to Lowell, and some ex-Pere Marquette trackage in Lowell.

The first scene is the venerable GP9 #24 pulling a cut of loaded CHs "Wheaties" over the Flat River and into Lowell for the massive King Milling Company, who will refine the grain into flour products. The tracks at this point are of Pere Marquette Heritage.

Next the 24 leaves Lowell and collects the previously pulled empties. The train then takes off back to Grand Rapids along the former Grand Trunk trackage, still maintained for 25-mph operation along the banks of the Grand River.

Filming locations are the Grand River Riverfront Park entrance, "the farm" near Ada, the Amway Spur and run-around track in Ada, and Fuller Junction, the home base of the railroad, in Grand Rapids at the junction with CSX Transportation.
