My daughters and I watched 399 come thru Lapeer later that day and they had alot more cars than what you listed--didn't bother to count as I figured that if there was 5 engines that it was the typical friday 10,000 ft. monster train. Any idea how many of those CN 9500's are still running around? Behind Chessie, those are second favorite GP-40-2's.
As of the printing of the 2005 Canadian Trackside Guide there were 70 units left out of an original 278. I'm sure it's lower than that now but I don't know for sure.
On Good Friday I managed to see 4 of them. There was a time I was sick of seeing 3 unit sets of them on a majority of the freights.
Some have been retired and some have been sold to the MBTA converted to GP40LH-2's.
Some were sold to Helm where they have gone to the KCS, Guilford, and numerous short lines. Some were sold to Progress Rail & Alstom
