So you want the poop scared out of you, well, as we park the train on the hill, at Rouge yard, and I set about securing my locomotives, I go back to the second unit open the door, and start in, and holy crap, here is this guy sitting in the conductor's seats on the second unit. I pause for a moment, and he wakes up looks at me and goes is where are we? Well I thought he said what time is it, and I said it is 3:00. By this time I can see he is not going to do any harm, but I am still a little freaked out. He says no man what town are we in, and I said oh man we are in Detroit, where did you come from? He goes man I been on the road three days from (? I cant rember, some where in AZ.). Then he goes is this the end of the line, and I answered, it is unless you want to go back the way you came in about 6 hours. Well he naw, witch way is downtown, and I point over yonder, and say about 6 mile's that way, to witch his response is awe F(&)* six miles! As I start to step off to tie on the hand break, he says I will be off in a few, and I said take your time. Well I take off to the front loco on the ground, and finish what I was doing and when the clerk came and picked us up we passed him on the access road, between the yard, and Rouge Steel, walking along and looking for a way out.

I was thinking the same thing -- and how it takes some guts to stow away aboard a locomotive to begin with.

Great report, as usual. These will be tresures in the future, not to mention today. So, of the four locomotives you had between the two trips, three of them are SD45 shells. Are these all rebuilt to SD40-2 specifications? The heritage of some rental SD45 shells are quite interesting: PRR, SP, ATSF, and many others. Thanks again.

Yeah, definately some intersting power. That HLCX 6511 is former SCL. And yes, all those "SD45's" are really SD40M-2/3's. Just about the only straight SD45's you'll find ar WC and NREX (ex-ATSF). Nice to see a good ol 38-2 in the lead. I bet you loved that, Matt!! I think you handled yourself in the right manner regarding the rider. I'm sure inside you wanted to tell him to get the hell of your train...but you never know what people will do...if you'd done that, you might've come up missing like that conductor in Lordstown, OH. But wait, he just went to the local mall...tehehe

I wonder when your rider did get on board... he even got a chair to sit in, compared to those who ride in/on the cars...

Do like the matched HLCX power though, nice!

I guess you probably haven't seen some of the stuff out there about hobos and tramps now, but evidently riding the rails is something that is still kind of popular. I can't remember the website, but I remember that about a month or two ago I was up way too late at night reading different people's accounts of riding the rails (illegally) in very recent times (since 9/11 I believe). The thing that struck me as being unusual is that quite often these people claim that they will ride in the trailing units and that the crew often doesn't know they're on board the train, much less in one of the unoccupied units. However, the accounts on the site also made it sound as though the crews hey came in contact with were pretty accomodating. I guess maybe most of those stories were from out west, but it did sound strange that so many people had good experiences doing something like that.

Yea Zack the matched set, and consecutivly numbered to boot to, was awEsome, until the lead unit took a poop and would load any more, then it was just a pain in the arse.

I've always wonder about DPU's. Like for instance in Rochelle, sometimes the trains will crawl past the park at walking speed, and with the DPU on the rear, unoccupied, it'd be pretty easy for someone to hop right on and go for a ride. Not just in Rochelle, but anywhere...namely Chicago!
