412: BNSF Freights Meet at Streator - Crazy Horn shows!

Unread post by Saturnalia »

Great P5, and then the meet produces some effects due to the stacker between the horn and the camera :)

Ep. 412: BNSF Freights meet in Streator, IL - Crazy Horns!

A pair of BNSF intermodal trains pound the NS Kankakee Branch diamond in Streator, Illinois.

The first train is eastbound, and is lead by a veteran Norfolk Southern EMD with an in-tune P5 horn

As the eastbound passes, the westbound who was stopped by the depot gets underway, blowing for the crossings on the other side of the first stack train. The containers muffle and then expose the sound, creating an interesting effect as they accelerate towards Iowa.

Yes, I believe it is. They have a good connection with the NS eastward from town. I'm not sure, but I believe Streator is one of the towns that big Chicago bypass/loop route was supposed to hit.

Streator was always an interchange point between Conrail and Santa Fe. They'd do most (all?) of their interchanging there that would've been done in Chicago, since Conrail did not have any sizeable facilities in Chicago. Freights out of Elkhart would turn southwest at Porter down the Porter branch and ultimately wind up in Streator.

Much of it must still be the case, as a lot of those trains off the Porter Branch have BNSF power and lots of BNSF cars and such...makes sense, in any case.
