Ep. 381: CSX Q334 & Y597 Meet @ Godfrey - End of the Searchlights is Near

CSX's daily Q334 pulls up to Godfrey Avenue after completing their airtest. A driver has brought the conductor and conductor trainee to the headend, and they board after the engineer brings the train to a stop.

As Q334 starts to pull, Y597, the West Side Local, swings around the Sunnyside Wye, putting it on track to meet the departing Q334 while they head for the yard.

Meanwhile, Q334 trips the Godfrey Avenue signal, mounted on the ancient cantilever. Its successor looms large...ready to replace the historical signal, likely by the end of the year.

On the point of Y597 is a rent-a-wreck from Helm, one of several making the rounds in Grand Rapids as CSX looks for more 4-axle power.

I understand the dimming of lights while approaching another train then turning them back on for the crossing, but why dim them again after leaving the crossing?

Westbound trains will typically dim their lights after crossing Godfrey since it is the last crossing before entering the yard. Only need a dim light in the yard.
