Power outage causing train signals to malfunction
(Kalamazoo, November 24, 2005, 2:12 p.m.) Due to a power outage at the Norfolk Southern Railroad Tower, there are several railroad crossings where the crossing gates and flashers are malfunctioning.
Some of the gates are down with flashers activated. Some gates are down without flashers. Some gates and flashers will not activate at all.
Consumers Energy has been notified of the situation and is taking steps to rectify the power outage as soon as they can.
Norfolk Southern personnel have taken steps to protect the intersections by placing people out to protect them as trains come through. In addition, trains will be stopping at each intersection and the conductor will be crossing in front of the train.
The crossings affected are: Harrison Street, Walbridge Street, Pitcher Street, North Edwards Street, North Burdick Street, and North Rose Street.
Kalamazoo Public Safety requests that anyone approaching these crossing use extreme caution, being certain that there is no train approaching, that there is no civilian or railroad personnel in or near the intersection.
