A train derailment has caused Detroit area evacuations early Monday morning. The train derailed on Detroit's northeast side, close to I-75, and a few of the derailed cars are blocking Nevada.

7 train cars were off the track, including 4 boxcars and 3 tank cars. Officials are forcing evacuations within a 1-mile radius of the derailment, for fear that the tank cars could be leaking noxious fumes.

Greenfield Union, Greenfield Park, and Grayling Elementary School have been evacuated. Mattie Majors, of the Detroit Public Schools, spoke with 7 Action News and said the students of Greenfield Park and Grayling are being evacuated to Pershing High School, located at 7 Mile and Ryan. It is not yet known where the students of Greenfield Union are being evacuated to.

The cause of the derailment is yet unknown. Fire and Hazmat crews have been called to the scene. According to Hazmat crews, this is a level 3 Hazmat situation, which means an uncontrolled leak situation, concerning 300-400 gallons of chemicals. One of the cars could have been carrying methyl alcohol, which is harmful of inhaled or swallowed. The health effects of methyl alcohol include blurred vision/blindness, headaches, nausea, and can be fatal.

According to Gloria Combes, of CN Railroads, only one of the tanks has a slow leak, at a rate of 8 drops her minutes. Combes explained that this was a magnitude less than anticipated, but they chose to err on the side of caution.

Vincent Hill lives in the vicinity of the crash. He told 7 Action News that the wheels of the train appeared to be sparking before the cars toppled over, and a few of the cars were close to hitting residential housing.

According to officials, only local traffic has yet been disrupted as a result of this derailment. However, police have been blocking off the area, and suggest motorists avoid the general vicinity of the derailment.
