JAIL Lansing Branch Lines

Unread post by atrainguy60 »

I was curious if both the JAILs Old Town Branch and the branch that extends from next to the CN/JAIL diamonds southwest to Martin Luther King JR Blvd still see activity currently? They look pretty rough. I remember a while back there was talk about a new customer at the end of the Old Town branch, but I'm out of the loop whether or not JAIL still serves them.

Friedland (a scrap yard) is at the end of the Old Town branch. They don't use it regularly, but it's still useable; they cleaned it up a few years ago. I haven't seen anything laid out on the southwest branch, recently, though it's definitely more regularly used than the Old Town branch. I think it's only been used as storage the last few years.

Thanks guys for the info. Good to hear they're still used, even if it is rare.

The last switch down the Old Town Spur was in early November, 2023, unless it happened since then and no one reported it here: http://railroadfan.com/phpbb/viewtopic. ... nd#p531168

Coincidentally I was there for it. I was in Lansing on other business and ran over there to see if anything was happening and lucked out as JAIL was pulling a load from Friedland.

Reid Machinery hasn’t shipped since the ADBF was sold. It was just coincidence but scrap prices were high so they ordered like ten gondolas and purged a bunch of junk. I think maybe there was one high-wide shipment since and that’s it.

They had cars stored in it last year, plastics hoppers, but not in a while
