Wyoming Yard wye
Wyoming Yard wye
Anyone know why they don't use the wye that was built over the old roundhouse for turning equipment? Track condition maybe?

They do still use it. It's called the cinder pit wye. The reason it doesn't see as much use any more is that it's not as convenient. Power for the road trains is usually parked in front of the tower any more. Getting at the cinder pit wye from the tower requires handling a lot of extra switches and time making your way to the back of the yard. Easier to just run down to the Sunnyside wye instead.

Also, isn’t it too short to turn two or more modern 6-axles at once?SD80MAC wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 1:27 pmThey do still use it. It's called the cinder pit wye. You can fit 2 typical wide-nose GEs on the cinder pit wye, but no more than that. I turned a pair of AC6000s on it one night and it took every inch of rail to do so.Saturnalia wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 2:36 pmAlso, isn’t it too short to turn two or more modern 6-axles at once?SD80MAC wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 1:27 pmThey do still use it. Re: Wyoming Yard wye
I thought I had heard that the track from the diesel house lead to the wye is OOS.

That would be the dispatch track, IIRC.trnwatcher wrote: ↑Tue Oct 13, 2020 4:56 pmI thought I had heard that the track from the diesel house lead to the wye is OOS.

It would seem that the wye at Sunnyside is the popular choice for turning power. I'm curious if and when the wrecking ball will hit the empty engine house.

For now the engine house is still used by MOW, the signal department and the radio/communications department.
