Grand Rapids Question

Unread post by jrgerber »

My daughter is thinking about moving into the Bicycle Factory apartment on Front St SW. There's a rail line that runs past it. Looks like the CSX line from the CSX yard to Ann St. How many trains a day does this CSX segment in Grand Rapids see?

Thank you.

I'd say no more than 6 movements a day. Mqt rail, CSX yard job, and Grand elk should each go by a maximum of twice a day.. some days no movements by that particular railroad.

All the moves are from 6pm to 6 am. CSX and GDLK deliver to the GR around midnight-ish, MQT can be later coming and going. If train whistles disturb her sleep, she won't like it. 2 crossings Front and Butterworth within spitting distance.
Renter be warned.
We live about a mile from the GR / CSX diamond. If the wind is out of the east or it's calm we can hear the trains at night blowing the whistle for Turner, Ann, and all the west side crossings. Doesn't bother me if I even hear it but it does my wife.

Weekends are the least busy, Friday evening has a CSX train, and Sunday evening. Usually nothing in between those movements unless MQT runs an extra.

Thanks, is there a scrap yard on this particular segment served by CSX?

Yes Padnos is served by Y297 and sometimes the Grand Elk, too. Supposedly that land will be sold at some point in the near future though since the area is being gentrified

Padnos Wealthy St yard is viewable from the apt's on the sw side :D . They had and may still have a GE center cab. Padnos Turner Ave yard is about 3 miles north on the same line. It had / has a GE end cab sometimes visible from Turner Ave from their non-ferrous facility. Both facilities have some neat material handlers. 8)
