Ice storm stops CN east/south Bound L550

Unread post by Mike MP 473.9 »

On December 31st at approximately 01:00 C N train L 550 out of Sault Ste. Marie,( the Soo) Michigan had to make an abrupt stop at MP 477 on the Manistique sub due to a fallen tree blocking the main line. as it turned out by 15:00 later in the day the MOW had to clear 67 ice and wet snow laden trees from Trout lake to Kinross off the main per their radio traffic. Power was out at all Rudyard crossings and crews had to stop at each crossing and flag the crossing. the eastern U.P. was without power for up to a week in some areas. power crews were brought in from the thumb area and southwest Michigan to assist in the week long repair. No damage and no contact made by the lead engine to any of the trees as the first tree was on a straight section of track in view with enough time to stop. By 16:00 L 500 was on the move south once again for Gladstone yard.
