The Michigan Iron Industry Museum in Negaunee has received $120,000 in funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to restore the Yankee, one of the oldest surviving steam locomotives in the United States.
Tomorrow, Sept 3, the Yankee locomotive will be traveling by flatbed from Negaunee to a conservator in Pennsylvania for work. So if you see a tea kettle on US2, I-75 or 23, that’s what it is!
According to WLUC -TV the Yankee was loaded for shipment yesterday. From the photo on the WLUC website it appears that the locomotive may be sharing a ride with a transformer.
I cannot tell if the load is oversize which would restrict the movement to daylight hours.
