I was waiting for Q329 at the Interurban (NYC) bike trail bridge and I noticed a new connection was being put in place for a industry. Anyone know what is going in there? It was just a bare dirt lot with some tracks laid out

Something to do with tank cars IIRC.

Also, that bridge is the former interurban, later NYC. Had nothing to do with the GR&I.

Thank you for clarifying which bridge is involved. I was wondering where the heck the GR&I trail bike Is.

Panel track is starting to be installed on the site. It was a quick glance trying to avoid Godfrey St pitfalls and potholes but it looks like the spur will tie in to Old 17 just west of the crossing. Great to see this new investment especially right in the city. Is that adjacent lumberyard (Tim Tom?) still open?

They’re building quite a bit of track in there. So far there is a spur that goes south from Godfrey and dead ends at Chestnut. Another one parallels Old 17 and ends at the embankment for the interurban bridge. There is also a switch that goes east right after the switch that comes off Old 17, and 2 tracks that parallel 17 towards Godfrey. Also, I don’t know if it’s been mentioned anywhere else, but this is going to be a Beacon Recycling facility. They’re the same scrap company that runs the facility in Traverse City on GLC.

Wondering if this new spur would somehow connect with the spur off Judd Ave that goes over Plaster Creek to the warehouses back south of Hall St. or thats not the plan?

No, not even remotely close.

I guess I am a bit confused about how the tracks are aligned.

The spur that goes south from Godfrey and dead ends at Chestnut is the spur the customer will actually be located on? Has Beacon taken over the property that Enviro Contral Metals?
If so, and I think that is correct given the address, then the question is which side the of the property will the spur be located on? Will it be running alongside the Interurban trail which runs along the west side of the property that will be used by Beacon? Or will this spur be coming down the east side of the property. This would appear more likely given the angle of a switch (assuming it is coming from the west).

I'm also a bit confused about the tracks that parallel Old 17 towards Godfrey. Are these short spurs that could be used for storing a few cars while CSX is switching the line, or will Beacon have a track mobile to switch cars and these tracks will be the interchange tracks? Also, does it look like the line going toward the Interurban bridge will be connecting to Old 17? As I am looking at this I have a plan of what I think it looks like in my head, but it isn't clear.

Beacon appears to has bought the Environ Controls business and additional property to the north where the shingle recycler was. According to AcessKent, they own all along CSX all the way to Godfrey.

I would bet they will have their own track mobile. The track that dead ends at the interurban bridge will not connect to Old 17 at that end. The two tracks that parallel Old 17 towards Godfrey will likely be used to rearrange and store cars.

So where will the switch be that accesses this spur?

It's looking like it's going to be more towards Godfrey, and will be an eastbound trailing-point switch.

Rode the bike trail bridge this morning and looks like they are almost finished except for installing the switch on old 17 siding near Godfrey.

Drove by the site again yesterday....track machines are on the new track but it is not yet connected to Old 17. Bundles of ties are staged. Tracks parallel to mainline at Godfrey end are not yet built out.

Didn't have a chance to update y'all, but it looked like they were installing the connection to Old 17 track at Godfrey on Monday the 5th.

Had a Dr appointment so I walked the Interurban trail on the way home.

Spur's connected to Old 17; it has a tail track long enough for probably a trackmobile and one or two cars. At Chestnut, concrete is being laid for a wide driveway-type entrance. It's big. The lot's been cleared out, but there are lots of trees blocking any possible view.

There are also a few huge piles of scrap, already sorted by type, on the site.

The next lot over, between the tracks and Market Street, is also being cleared out. No idea who for.
