General Motors to close Hamtramck assembly (and 4 others)

Unread post by NS3322 »

A sad but not surprising announcement today that GM will be closing its Hamtramck assembly plant (along with Oshawa and Lordstown).
Will this be a huge blow to CN or NS? (I am not sure who switches the plant).

GM is also closing the Warren Transmission Plant, but it does not appear that they use rail. (When was the last time time they did?)

Not surprising at all. Hamtramck, Oshawa and Lordstown all make sedans, sales of which are in the toilet. Could see them re-tooling at least one of these plants in the future for small SUV or truck production.

Conrail Shared Assets switches it, since late 2013. CN used to, but its switch to the plant trackage is removed.

I just checked the 2018 AAR Terminal Guide. They only ship outbound from Hamtramck. Hope somebody got the value out of that new connection to Conrail.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Orion is closed soon. There is no activity there for a while.

Orion just negotiated new work in regards to autonomous vehicle production so that shouldn't be going anywhere.

GM and the City of Detroit really screwed the people of Poletown, back in the 80s. After the announcement back in the 80s, nobody could sell their homes. Homes were burned either by arsonists, or homeowners for the insurance, reducing the value of the remaining homes. GM and Detroit stalled while the value of the homes declined, and they bought them at ummmm....fire sale prices!
