Amtrak - y u no let me drink?
We rode the Blue Water last week. Departing Union Station passengers may NOT purchase an alcoholic beverage until the train is in Michigan. What gives? Is this due to Illinois rules, Indiana rules or a Sunday rule? Thanks very much.

Sounds like the Lounge Car Attendant may have been slow in setting up shop. I know of no prohibition for alcohol affecting this service. Generally, they wait on business class first and then regular folks after tickets have been lifted. (Around Burns Harbor not all the way into Michigan)

This, Amtrak follows the state's drinking laws that the train is currently in. Indiana has more stringent rules on Alchohol than it's surrounding states. Also the Bar car is never open for about an 30/45mins after the train leaves the originating station.GreatLakesRailfan wrote:Isn't Indiana dry on Sundays?

It's a trap. They want you to get drunk in Michigan so they can nab you. It's illegal to be intoxicated on a train in MI.

In an "offensive state"... If the intoxicated people weren't so obnoxious it wouldn't be against the law.

I have found living in Michigan for over 45 years you can drink all you want as long as #1 don't drive a car, #2 don't make an ass of yourself. Just nod and smile and keep tossing them down.
You are right on with that quotehoborich wrote:"Pass the bag that holds the bottle. Ain't no one keeping score"

It's also only illegal to be drunk on a train, it doesn't say anything about selling alcohol on a train.PatAzo wrote:Jochs wrote:It's a trap. They want you to get drunk in Michigan so they can nab you. It's illegal to be intoxicated on a train in MI.

Alchohol is not permitted to be sold from grocery or liquor stores, however bars and restaurants can sell on Sunday.

The "parlor car" was open and the man in front of me wanted to purchase Heineken, the parlor car attendant informed me no alcoholic beverages until the train stopped in New Buffalo, MI. I merely got a cup of ice.

Apparently, Indiana bans liquor sales other than inside bars and restaurants on Sunday. Found a reference on google. Didn't know that.

It appears as though a flask might be a a very useful tool to keep with you on Sunday travel via AMTRAK. Thanks for clearing the matter up.

THEY ban liquor sales. Maybe they could just give it away. No sales tax.CR900945 wrote:Apparently, Indiana bans liquor sales other than inside bars and restaurants on Sunday. Found a reference on google. Didn't know that.
