Gypsum operations near Tawas City

Unread post by SW »

I know there have been occasional postings about this, most recently in "Where Is It" thread. Was in the Tawas area this past weekend and on the way home checked out the (former) gypsum loading locations on the LSRC, to see if there was any hope...
- The Alabaster spur, from Alabaster Junction south to US 23, is still in, with rusty coal hoppers in storage. For those that don't know, it previously continued south past US 23 into the now-gone US Gypsum facility (that operation actually moved a short distance west, and does not use rail).
- The White Rock spur, located off Whittemore Rd. between McIvor and National City is now gone. The passing track remains, although I couldn't tell if it was connected at both ends (didn't stop to look). Not sure if the White Rock gypsum facility is still open.
- The National City spur was overgrown and paved over where it crosses National City Rd. The wallboard plant there appears to be active.
- The spur at Michigan Gypsum near Turtle is gone, although the facility appears to be open.

Does anyone know - for ships loading at Port Gypsum, does the rock come from the Alabaster facility and / or the White Rock operation?

Any corrections or updates would be appreciated.
