Switchers in GR

Unread post by EWRice »

Today my wife and kids were in GR picking up parts today. It was a good day to see trains for them. My oldest son told me that he saw a yellow switcher somewhere. The only yellow switcher I can think of is at Padnos, but he swears it looked like the "black train" 7014. I can't think of any yellow sw or mp platforms in GR. He is usually not wrong about these things, so I don't doubt him. Educate me, please!

The only thing I can think of is the yellow GE at Joe Brown.

The Grand Elk tracks cross 76th near Burligame but they have Geeps (road switchers) not convention switch engines. Jenison would be CSX and their switchers have bene gone for close to 10 years. Again Geeps mostly for yard work.

76th I'm assuming MICat now McAlister, GDLK is just east of Clyde Park
Burlingame, I'm assuming north of 28th - Maybe a switcher someplace in the old Reynolds Metal?I had my wife drive around it last weekend but I couldn't see much other than the big salt pile covered by black plastic with me looking thru one of those eye surgery mirrors.
Jenison -only the CSX main

Better put a GPS unit in the vehicle LOL

The sand transload just north of 28th St on the GDLK has a larger yellow Trackmobile.

I am going to have to assume he saw one of Grand Elk's road switchers and that's what he was talking about. I am surprised, though. I can't think of one instance where he has told me he saw something and was mistaken. He misses nothing, especially when it comes to trains. I showed him pictures of Grand Elk, CSX, Joe Brown and he insisted what he saw looked nothing like any of them. He then pointed to the ho sw9 on the mantel and said it looked like that, but yellow. He must have been half asleep and dreaming.

Just a though: could it have been a dead in tow unit coming through? There is an ex-UP MP15 in Hartford that is yellow. I don't know the routing it took to get there. Or it could have been something coming through under similar circumstances

I think I figured it out. After another GR trip to the zoo, he tells me that he saw a red and white engine (Wisconsin Southern) and that was the same place that the yellow switcher was. So that narrowed it to Hughart. Then he tells me that the yellow engine had a really big snow plow on the back. A little research shows that there may be a yellow plow/spreader at Hughart. For a 4 year old that has never seen one, I can see how that could be mistaken.
Mystery solved.

Ah yes, the old CR Russell plow in Hughart. Makes sense!

That would make sense! Do they ever use that old thing?
