Wyoming Yard Speed Upgrades

Unread post by Saturnalia »

Overheard scanner chatter the other day, one of the latest EHH rule changes is upgrading trackage from the "other than main track" rule which dominated CSX culture previously. Under that rule, all non-main track was default 10 mph.

Thus, all of Wyoming Yard was 10mph trackage, including the "Old Main" used by Amtrak.

Sounds like a lot of slow orders were put in place over some of these areas due to track conditions, but now trains can speed through the yard compared with previously. In particular, this should shave minutes off of Amtrak's schedule and running times by more than doubling the speed limit on the main.

The new speed limits are:
25 mph - Old Main & Track 2
20 mph - Tracks 4 & 6
15 mph - a whole smattering of tracks, including the Service, Even Lead and Coach Lead.

These changes took effect Friday morning.

As you may recall, CSX did massive track work at Wyoming yard last year.

Indeed, but many of these spots were always good engineering wise, just held back by that lame rule.

Like getting on and off moving equipment, some of EHH's rule changes are speeding up the way CSX moves.

The speed changes were being discussed before EHH arrived at CSX. Same with the train changes over the last 2 weeks. Rhey may have been EHH "inspired" but not dictated.

Is the main track also 25mph thru Wyoming (and has it always been), or some other speed?

The "Old Main" is the "main track". It's just officially called the former and generally referred to as the latter.

Not as massive as the year before, both of which had nothing to do with the speed increase.
