Zug Island Coke

Unread post by ConrailDetroit »

Yesterday, NS pulled a loaded coke train from Zug Island. Is coke being processed on Zug Island and shipped elsewhere by rail now?

From my understanding, since January of 2016, the increase of nearly, if not daily, coke trains on the Boat Line is due to the supplier of coke to Zug changing from one that could utilize ships to one that now requires rail. CSX delivers coke as well, but not as frequent as NS.

The NS 420 brings Coke Loads north to Oakwood while the 421 runs south with the empties. A first or second shift job at Oakwood will run the cars to Zug Island.

DTE Coke services ownes and operates the coke battery on Zug Island with the coal coming in by boat. USS Gt. Lakes Works purchases their coke from USS Coke Works at Clairton, PA and it come to the island by rail. DTE sells their coke to whoever wants it. ESSAR Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont purchses coke from DTE and it goes by boat from Zug to the Canadain SOO.
DTE Coke is also selling coke to AK Steel in Dearborn, MI. This goes by both truck and CN rail from Zug to the Dearborn Works. DTE in the past has sold coke to AccorMittal in Cleveland and South Chicago. This coke has gone by both boat and rail.
