BO Tower Countdown

Unread post by Super Chief »

According to my Elk sources BO tower is done in 20 days. Tower personal will be eliminated, Amtrak takes over dispatching and Elk radios have to have Amtrak frequencies. We knew it wouldn't be long get it while you can.

Guess I'll slide this in here. Should be an interesting watch if you're into operations.

Do we have a source for these claims on either side? Just curious.

So will all of the michigan line be under amtrak dispatch? Meaning JAIL would contact them instead of NS Dearborn?

BO tower Kazoo..

Unread post by Todd Cline »

Looks like the clock is finally running out for old BO. I find it hard to believe that there doesn't seem to be any sort of preservation movement to save the tower. Sure, It will need to be moved, and no, I don't have the funds to do it. But Towers have been moved before. Look at Griffith, look at Marion. This is THE LAST tower in our area. I'd like to see some effort to try to save this relic. I have some old communication equipment from BO from the 1970's I'd willingly donate to the tower if it was saved. Lets see if we can save BO from the land-fill.

They could still use the tower to hold automated interlocking equipment. The tower in Holly has been this way since the 70's.

As I recall the tower is just computer based now for everything, so my bet is all of that information goes to Amtrak/ the Dwarborn DS. (Not sure how the agreement for dispatching works out so I cannot say what will happen). The most likely case I would think is the tower becomes an empty shack. And eventually is knocked down.. That is if it's not saved.

Side note is the tower going to see its last train on the 19th or 20th?

There are plans, or were, in place for BO after retirement. Some of these are still up to NS and Amtrak when the tower closes due to logistics. This is THE LAST New York Central and the last manned wooden interlocking tower in existence in the US.

Is the parking lot on the south side of BO open to the public? I was going to try and make a run down there Tuesday afternoon.

Park just west of the tower along East Willard Street. Should be on-street parking that gets you where you need to be.

Right where the peg is here:
