Stub end railyards in Michigan

Unread post by Proto48Patrick »

Besides Kilgore yard, are there any other rail yards that were stub ended either by design or later in the yards lifespan? I'm looking to see what determined the use of certain types of bumpers or ballast piles at the end of each stub track.

Thanks,

Completely forgot about that yard. Been there a few times measuring up equipment but never made it down far enough to see how the track ends.

Thanks Doktor No

Any specifics about those yards? I've been around the west side of the Ludington yard but I didn't stop to see how the tracks terminated. Was it always a stub end yard or did all tracks converge to the boat slip?

Thanks!

CK&S North Yd had three tracks that were turned into stubs around 1990 or so, with pairs of ties for bumpers. Hinman Yd is stubbed up against the earthen approach of Raymond Rd where it passes over the main. I don't know whether the overpass predates the yard though. New Hollow Yd in Lansing is another.

I think New Buffalo was always stub-ended, but I am not sure...Ludington was bi-ended until the boat slips and such were removed. Not sure how they're buffered, perhaps one of the MQT guys could help there. New Buffalo these days basically ends into the woods...not sure how they were capped off.

The old Port Huron and Detroit parallel to the Trunks' Tunnel Yard has 6 stub-ended
tracks. There used to be only 3 stub tracks and one continued across Michigan Road
to interchange with the Trunk on the Mt. Clemens sub. 2 others joined back with that
track to from runarounds. The 2 double ended tracks and the runner would be used
for classification and the 3 stubs were generally storage, but that would change daily.
All 6 are still used by CSX.
I haven't lost my mind, it's on tape backup here somewhere...

Quite sure that New Buffalo was not always stub-ended... check how the tree line and tracks angle back in towards the mainline. Empty coal there to boot:

New Buffalo was originally not stub-ended. The west end of the yard was stub-ended some time in the mid 1990's.

It was stub-ended by 1995 when Beavers came through...

One of GTW/CN's Pontiac yards is stub ended. It's on the old PO&B near Walton Jct. Unused now if not removed.

CSX North yard near BC Cobb in Muskegon has 2 stub ended tracks. Both have Hayes style bumpers protecting the end of track.

Good info guys, how about more details on the ends of the stub?

Thanks,

At one time GTW/CN had a large stub end yard on the south side of 8 Mile Rd Detroit/Warren border (railroad name Nolan). For many years it was an old car storage cemetery. Been gone for 10 years or there abouts.

GDLK's Three Rivers yard use to be the main and passing tracks on the way to Niles. No bumper post or ballast pile just ends at Broadway St. Tracks across the street go over the trestle over the St. JOSEPH river just asphalt between them. Trestle is a fishing bridge now. The crew has to be careful with long trains because of no means to stop it .

Bumper won't stop a car unless it is going at a crawl. Most places consider hitting the bumper a rules violation. A pile of dirt, rocks, or cross ties are just as effective as a bumper and a lot cheaper. If the bumper was ripped out in an incident they may have just put some dirt and went on their way.

So would a pile of dirt / rocks / crossties constitute a bumper?

Yep. Touch them with the wheels and you have some explaining to do.
