A 3 unit 501 tonight. 4002,3834 & 4009 with 55 cars and at least 13 centerbeams. Switching Reitenmeyer in Schoolcraft at 6:00pm. Local was longer than 302 has been lately.

More power than usual sitting around Hughart today. HLCX 3834, 4002 and 3534 lashed together. 4124 & 4125 & wsor 4190 parked near the engine house. 4190 has been the yard switcher.

4124 and 4125 are both dead for the time being, I'm told. Sounds like a crew is on duty and will go south with 3534, 4002 and 3834 soon.

Thats curious. 3534 is on the point, long hood forward if they proceed with the current lashup.

Would they and could they go up and wye the power before heading southbound? I know the connections near the old Amtrak Station (Sunnyside?) would allow wyeing the power, but would they take the time and expense?

Are all of the units facing north? If they were not, they could switch around the power to have a south facing cab up front and the other ones behind.

Normally GDLK can spin the power at either CN in Kalamazoo or around the engine house in Elkhart. To spin in GR generally they will need a “reason” or run directly from turner to CSX go achieve the wye result.

Grand Elk has rights to turn power on the wye in Grand Rapids, I’ve only ever seen them do it once or twice though. NS used to turn their power fairly often.

Grand Elk just left Elkhart (per the rail cam) with about 40 cars mixed.

He had one towards the end of the train. Looks like SOO 301428.

The cameras have a 12 hour rewind buffer. Beyond that the owners occasionally post clips of special trains.

What lurker said, if you guys are expecting one check the replay for sure. The people in chat are pretty nice and can help find the train you are looking for.
Edit: Looks like they had 3 going north today but did not catch any car numbers. 2 wrapped in shrink warp it looked like and one with a yellow logo on the lumber.

I see 3534 is back at Hughart. Wondering if it is sticking around.

Did the 2 centerbeams you were looking for come from CN or NS to GDLK? I heard they are getting equal amounts from both class 1s?

C&M's lumber usually comes via CSX or NS-GDLK. Not aware of any via CN.

Today and at least once before I've seen the Grand Elk thru freight going south with loaded centerbeams. I understand loaded going north to Gearhart Yard on 302 and then loaded going south on the 501 local to the customer, but what is happening here? Why the reverse flow?

There were two cars today. One was NDYX 738476.

Because they took back to Elkhart the 2 cars for me (one the NDYX) that had made it to Kalamazoo. You tell me why  Most of the western Canadian cars come CN - NS- GDLK. Apparently NS raided their rates about the 1st of the year. Now they are coming CN - CSX
