Derailment on the GLC at 127

Unread post by firemedic54 »

Someone from Facebook posted on Michigan Incidents about a derailment at 127 which makes it the GLC. Per WNEM the freeway is closed in both directions but I can't find anything on their site. Anyone know anything about this?

Is this that branch that crosses at grade or one of the overpasses?

Sounds like the grade crossing. It was put out as north of M-57 so I'd guess the crossing. Looked at other Mid-Michigan television websites but still can't find anything.

That is a neat crossing, but not spectacular track! Hopefully they derailed away from the crossing and the train can be pulled off!

GLC passes under the 127 freeway. I don't think it would close the freeway unless some overzealous fire dept. enjoyed doing that.

Saw it on my way back from Alma today, was just west of 127, looked like two or three cars tipped to the south of the tracks. That was about all i could see going 65mph. Nothing blocking 127 at that time, think i went through about 15:45

Pixl,
Search US 127 at the M57 interchange.... GLC crosses US127 at grade. The crossing you show is 10 miles north in Ithaca

I see that now  is that a spur off the main line and where does it go?

Lansing State Journal

ASHLEY — A rail crossing on U.S. 127 in southern Gratiot County has been reopened after a train derailed this afternoon.

Three train cars loaded with grain overturned about 1:35 p.m. at the crossing just north of M-57, Michigan State Police Lt. Kevin Sweeney said.

The cars were removed and the road was reopened a short time later, he said.

No one was hurt, and authorities said they don’t know what caused the derailment, Sweeney said.

They do not know what caused the derailment? Poorly maintained track is what caused the derailment!

And NYCMan... You work for GLC to know that the track in your words is "poorly maintained"? From where that track was in the 90's til now that track is 1000% better now. Could have been a broken rail, broken wheel, journal burned off..... How about we let the railroad investigate before us railfans jump to conclusions?
