All SD26's have been cut up by Pan Am as of a few years ago.

I recently published a book that includes a chapter on each of the railroad operations of the Port Inland, Cedarville and Rogers City quarries with photographs taken from 1965 to 1991. It is entitled "Taconite, Calcite, Dolomite, Michigan Mineral Railroads" that is available on Amazon.com. As you can tell by the title, it also covers Michigan's Iron Ore railroads. Byron Babbish

Welcome Bryon! BTW, I have one of your books(Book 4 of the GTW series). Very good coverage of the Holly Sub! Anyways, I don't mean to derail the thread, lol.

Yes, it's a cool pictorial book of the Holly Sub from the 1975 to 2000 south of Pontiac. It's part of The Railfan Chronicles book series.

All of my railroad books can be also seen (and purchased) on my website, ByronBabbish.com (other than the two I published this year, Michigan Mineral Railroads and Roundhouses of Michigan Railroads, which haven't been added to it yet). Byron

Cedarville is still running. Pictures taken 4/29/16. Loco is remote control, nobody on board.

Any public access to take pictures?
Sorry for the late reply. I've been on vacation for a week.
Only public access is where it crosses Hwy 134 on an overpass east of Cedarville and then at the other end of the line north of town at Swede Rd. That said, when I've stopped at the office (at the overpass) and asked for permission, they have allowed access to the private company road along the tracks which is where I took these photos. The train shuttles back and forth about every half hour (1 hour or so round trip). It moves along fairly slow. I'd guess maybe 20 mph tops. I've heard the operation can be irregular though for a variety of reasons.
The line isn't very photogenic. Just stone and cedar trees the whole way.

Folks, I have been wanting to photograph some ex Chicago & Illinois Midland® SD20 locos!!!! I never got any of them and now it may be too late!!!! I knew there were some at Port Inland® in the U.P. I also was "Following" one working in Peoria, Illinois (Illinois Midland®)! That loco then went to the Indiana Southern® in Indiana! The loco, SD20 #81, was still in full C&IM paint and lettering (though more recently with only "IM" showing)! Recently I "Searched" online for these locos! Number 81 was "Transferred" to Port Inland® to work with the other three C&IM SD20 locos! Man, I wish I went up there to photograph them! Last year (2016) they all were sold to Larry's Truck & Electric® near Youngstown, Ohio (McDonald)!!!! However, they may still be in C&IM paint! Does anyone here know more about these locos? :?: Are they being "Leased" somewhere? Is there a place I could go to photograph them? Could these SD20s still be at Larry's? If so, is it possible to get permission to go there and take pix on the property? :?: :?

If the Cedarville train is remote operated, and no one is aboard, where is it operated from, and where is the operator?

2019 Update:

I found a few photos of the new power on the Port Inland Railroad.

Part of the caption on Joshua Dudinetz's photo reads:
Joshua Dudinetz wrote:For reasons unknown, Genessee and Wyoming left the Port Inland operation in 2016, selling off their four green C&IM SD20s to LTEX in the process. Four somewhat similar locomotives were brought in by Carmeuse as replacements in the form of two SD20s and two GP9s.
The SD20's are: OPT 2030 and OPT 2041
The GP9's are: LSLX 1712 and the second one is a mystery.

The IMRR 81 to my knowledge never went to Port Inland and I know for sure wasn’t part of the group sold to LTEX. 81 went from the Indiana Southern to Marquette Rail where we had it for a few years. The summer of 2018 it was sold to KLWX and from there it was repainted and sold to Cargill.

GLC 392, I found out later in 2017 that C&IM SD20 #81 went to MQT! It was only for 2017-18! I found out recently about 81 being sold! I'm glad to have seen it last January!
Here, read all about what happened to C&IM 81 on this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=35066

Those shots are at the public crossing just south of the mine:

Be forewarned, that road really sucks headed south...and often impassable without 4WD or those of us not blessed with much underside clearance.

Might check it out this year. I think I tried it once but the road got real bad and had to turn around not sure if it was the same one though..
