Lansing related: JAIL is storing some of the coal cars that HESR was storing on the old spur to Quality Dairy and Reid Machinery. The rest are stored over on JAILs track at 496/St. Joseph and Clare Streets.

First time this spur has been used in almost a year as Quality Dairy has sold their blow mold operation and shut down their dairy, ice cream, juice/cider and grocery wholesaling divisions.

This is quite a long thread, so I'm not sure (and can't remember) if this has been covered already. What happened to the tower in North Lansing? I haven't been to Old Town in quite a few years and I was just told that it's no longer there.

It was moved to the Lansing Model Railroad Club.

A crew was conducting circuitry testing on the North Street crossing protection today around 12:30. I will believe real operation may be afoot when the EXEMPT signs come off the crossbucks there.

Can someone explain what the purpose of the supposed reactivation of this line would be? I am looking at it on Google Maps, and I don't see a potential customer that would have the volume to reactivate the line.

There's a paper recycler at the end of the line that has been rumored for several years to begin shipping by rail. My understanding is that the two parties couldn't agree on who would pay for renovating the track.

Friedland recycles all kinds of stuff and is at the end of the spur.

They had several hi-rails in Lansing today and at least six guys working on various areas including the crossing on Cesar Chavez and the track just south of there.

A Rail Fan's moment for sure.

Very Entertaining thread.

Lansing's Old Town railroad spur to be reactivated
Postby Larry G » Fri Dec 17, 2010 11:05 pm

Story reported tonight on WILX-TV 10 in Lansing:
Lansing - You'll hear the train rolling through Lansing's old town next year. City officials announced Friday that the historic railroad spur that runs through Lansing's Old Town will soon be put back to use. The rail line will be refurbished by the Adrian and Blissfield Rail Road Company and will be scheduled for limited use starting in 2011. Rail cars will be used to transport recycled materials from the Friedland Industries facility on Center Street.
According to railroad company officials, a three-car train will load recycled materials from Friedland Industries once every week or two, but never more than once a day, depending on final confirmation of train schedules. The train will move very slowly in the Old Town area, will not block traffic on Grand River, and noise concerns will be limited.

So does the Adrian & Blissfield have trackage rights over CSX to get to the track?

Yes. Google “Sunset Food Mart” on Kalamazoo street and you will see where the two lines split and the JAIL/old NS line goes south to Mason.
