Two people safely got out of their car shortly before it was struck by a freight train early Tuesday morning in northwest suburban Wheeling, officials said.
The car turned off the road and ended up on Canadian National Railway tracks, said Wheeling Fire Department Battalion Chief Jim Callanan.
The two occupants were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, but Callanan did not know their conditions. No one else was hurt. The car was demolished.
The collision happened on the tracks about 2:40 a.m. at Palatine and Frontage Roads, Callanan said.
