Diesel Exhaust at Union Station

Postby Jochs on Tue Feb 07, 2012 8:26 pm

Here's an article I found addressing the problem of diesel exhaust fumes at Union Station.

It appears that Amtrak plans on replacing all of its locomotives with cleaner equipment in 2015. This, of course, depends on federal funding, which has been targeted for congressional budget cuts, so don't hold your breath...unless you are bothered by the diesel fumes.

This was part of the reason why the trains always backed into the station. Kept the exhaust from the concourse. Also why METRA has the locomotive on the outbound end of the consists while under the shed. That, and who wants to walk by an F40 providing HEP in run 8?

There was a fire this week on the roof above the ventilation fans. The fire department believes it was caused by burned-out motor in the ventilator room.

They had another fire in the ventilation ducts this evening. Train service has been shut down into Union Station.

Why dont they use the P32AC-DM with the third rail capability in union station to cut down on the diesel exhaust. They would of course have to install a third rail system but I guess it would be worth it.

It would be easier if they tore down the old post office or redid the exhaust system.

Old post Office? They built the extension south in the 1990's. That is when much of it became covered up. That's when the Domino in my possession came down. The signal bridge it sat on, just ouside the shed, is now covered up by the Post Office.

That is all covered up now. I've been told the tower is still there under the post office at least the interlocking relays and whatnot. Incidentally, my signal is the one that governs movement on the track this scoot is sitting on.

There is only one answer, High Octane Diesel Fuel and 2 Spark Plugs per cylinder to improve combustion....
