Looks like an ordinary cabbage with a paint job that looks like the person who designed it had no idea of what a good paint scheme is

I like it cause it's the only NPCU in that paint... Also it has a P5 horn!

Its technically a cross between Phase III and Phase IV. True Phase IV F40s didn't have black around the headend windows or on the nose. This was the staple cab on the Heartland Flyer for years. I'm not sure why it was replaced, there may have been a grade crossing collision. Amtrak seems to sit on NPCU's at Beech Grove for a few years and then rebuild them. That's what happened to 90221.

There are still quite a few phase IV NPCUs & F40s sitting in the Bear Shops. Really only a handful were painted in Phase V, By the time V was rolling out Amtrak was beginning on retiring the F40/Cabbage fleet.

#90218 was my favorite Cabbage...

You can make out 3 different paint schemes on that one Cabbage.

Nice picture :) it got pretty roasted... I know that there was another phase IV that was used on the downeaster that had a special logo, but didn't know that there were any more still out there. Back in 2008 I saw the line of phase IV P40's in ivy city engine terminal before they were shipped to beech grove.

Click this link and then click on the "NPCU" red button for what I've found to be the most comprehensive NPCU updates and paint scheme website. There are currently 22 NPCU's, and most of them are in service. 90229 is the only one left in Phase V, the remainder are in Phase III, Phase V, or the Cascades scheme. According to the same site, F40s #401-409, inclusive, and including NPCU 406 which is currently on the 40th Anniversary train, are the only F40s remaining on Amtrak property. Some are at Bear while three are at Beech Grove, apparently (as of January 2011). It's a great and regularly updated site, and it's easy to get lost in there hunting around for different things on the Amtrak roster and its history!

Actually there is really three versions of Phase IV. The regular considered IV which would be seen on an F40 as a Silver car and just the Blue & Red stripes. There is also a "NEC" variation that was mainly put on the P40s but were also seen on some F40s. The NEC IV on the F40s have the Black band around the windows (and a dark grey one on the P40s). The 3rd version of course is the IVb we see nowadays.

It's been sitting in Chicago bad ordered for close to a year and a half now, as well as the two Phase III NPCUs. With the Michigan Service up to 110 MPH, and parts of the Lincoln Service going up to 110 soon and the fact the NPCUs can't run 110, there's unfortunately really no use for them. They have more than enough Phase V NPCUs running around to cover the Hiawatha, Illini and Pere Marquette, and with the possibility of Talgo sets going to the Hiawatha, the need for NPCUs will be reduced even more.

We haven't had NPCUs on the Pere Marquette in awhile....almost a month I believe

I like that scheme....better than this one, which IMHO, is pretty drab. (This is the Pere Marquette in St. Joseph, MI on 4/5/12.)
