CSX Traffic Through Terre Haute

Unread post by Sparks1 »

Needing a little information from Hoosier railfans. For the past 2-3 years, Saturdays in Terre Haute made for great train watching if you liked CSX and the Indiana Railroad. I live about an hour away so I don't get to Terre Haute too often. Last year, I saw 25 trains in 6 hours at Haley and 10th and Locust. Recently, I spent nearly 7 hours in Terre Haute starting around 9:30 AM and saw only 5 trains all day. (2) were on the old C&EI while the other (3) were on the old CCC&St.L/PRR. So some questions for the group:

1) Is Hunter Harrison really jacking things up that much on the CSX?
2) Has train count dropped that much through Terre Haute?
3) Are there any peak train watching hours in Terre Haute?

As much as I hate to say this, I am guessing the answers to my three questions are "yes", "yes", and "no".

Harrison is removing trains system-wide. The Big Four Route has always had heavy auto traffic, and judging by the number of auto racks that have been abolished since his appointment, I would say the traffic counts on the line have been hit hard. 5 all day seems a little low though, Perhaps there was a delay somewhere, or busy hours have shifted with new timetables. I have never railfanned Terrence Haute before so I cannot fairly guess the busiest hours, but in terms of train counts, the Big Four isn't running anymore than 20 trains every 24 hours these days, and the C&EI cannot be much higher. I wouldn't expect traffic to exceed more than 55 or 60 trains on the best of days. I live near the B&O through NW Ohio, and train counts have fallen from about 70 in Pre-Harrison days to about 50-55. So basically, less trains is inevitable, and I wouldn't be surprised if traffic counts have fallen through Terre Haute by a similar percentage
I'll take a hotstot intermodal over a manifest any day

Did the Q649 & Q650 between Clearing and Terre Haute (I believe to the INRD), that were established in August already get the ax? How is the INRD traffic moving on CSX?
