CSX-CN Junction West of Kirk Yard

CSX Clarke July 2nd.jpg
Not yet in service, but close. New crossovers on the CSX Barr Subdivision just west of Clarke. This will provide a connection to the CN Matteson Sub at MP 44.3 ("CSX Jct") and access to Kirk Yard. I assume that this will be a replacement for the current Clarke (a single RH crossover).

Well it's about time! The CN switch and their part of the connection has only been sitting there ready and waiting for CSX for about 3 years now lol.

Kirk Yard Access.png
Here is a diagram of the area showing the access to Kirk Yard. The new connection will give quick access from the CSX Barr Subdivision to Kirk Yard without taking the more circuitous route south to the CSX Elston Subdivision (or further south). The diagram also shows NS's connection (replacing a route on the CN South Bend Subdivision). CSX Barr and CSX Elsdon tie together at Blue Island, but Barr will be a more direct route.

How many trains total per day are using the Porter Branch at 482 these days? Haven't seen much action whilst railfanning there or watching ATCS.

There is an NS train that uses the connection regularly (instead of the CN South Bend Subdivision route). I do not know the exact count of trains but I have seen trains pass through on ATCS.

CP Cline Avenue has apparently been turned on. Track equipment must now report clear of it.

That is good news ... the bad news is that CSX has converted the interlockings to the east to satellite over the past few months. It was nice to see trains before and after they were on the Chicago Line.
