I would like to inform everyone about an incident that recently occurred at Pine Junction, one of the busiest hotspots in the Midwest - a typical day yielding a minimum of 120 freights.

A well-known Railfan has jeopardized the future for other railfans at Pine. Known as a generally acceptable place to Railfan without recent issues, that has all changed.

The railfan thought it would be a brilliant idea to stand on the tracks on top of the CN Bridge at the Junction. This is just a mere mile or two from the massive CN Kirk Yard. For whatever reason the railfan felt justified his actions, didn't go unpunished.

He was kicked out, but as always, left lasting effects for everyone else. CN and CSX are now actively kicking out everyone parked or standing anywhere near the place, and CN is considering putting barricades up. Many railfans frequent this semi-popular spot and have been all asked to leave aggressively by CSX and CN.

This is a classic example of how someone's action can spoil the fun for everyone else. It has worsened the already not so good reputation of us "foamers" to rail cops as they now actively patrol and kick out people.

Tracks are for trains - not you and your cameras.

When was recently? I didn't notice any problems on Sunday when I stopped there. There was what I assumed was a railfan couple parked in a usual spot. I'm not sure what they were waiting for as they didn't seem to be actively watching the trains. (They didn't look like security.)

Last week. A group of 7 people that went recently were all asked to leave, so maybe you just got lucky. Regardless, I'd be more careful around there.

Not familiar with Pine Junction. Is it railroad or public property?

I've had the impression of it being debatable. In a completely industrial area, but with conveinent large gravel areas that can fit cars.

I know it was a little iffy to visit a decade ago and most people had run ins with RR cops, but it became so popular I think it's now tolerated. I haven't heard any issues at all post-2010, until now.

The gravel lot that I have seen people use is between CSX and CN's City Branch (EJ&E on the older maps). I would not consider that public property. (Lake County GIS shows that land owned by the B&O Railroad, which is now CSX. Most of the land in the area is owned by a railroad or US Steel and the property line through the junction is the center of Clark Rd.)

The last time I of was at pine was summer 2012 about
an hour before sun up. I was going from an over night
run from Green Bay,Wi. The only thing I was worried
about was stumbling over a corpse. Kinda creepy back
there when no trains are running. I parked on the south
side of the tracks and stayed put for about an hour. 9 trains.

This story was a hoax. The story was made up to make a certain railfan look bad. The people who made up the story admitted this. All of this story is bogus. Do Not Believe

if you guys haven't realized this crap happens every couple years because people are retarded. Cops go hot & heavy for a while and then nothing for years sooo yeah don't get all excited just let it run its course. Plus Pine sucks for photos just a decent place to sit, lots of other areas move on for a a while.
