I used to work around this engine on a daily basis. I doubt she has been sold, but just needed to find a new home. Since MCM is finishing up GM projects in Lansing, and is not on GMs good side. This engine was bought for one project. It started its MCM career at a nuclear fuel processing project in Cincinnati Ohio. MCM was used as an equipment rental company by Flour, for the Fernald Project. She was used maybe once a week.

In Lansing she spent most of the first three years out there in a GM building. NS wouldn't let us use the engine to switch the gons, so she got parked. When we started using the northern most siding we were able to move her around and at least shove some cars.

If memory serves me right, she used to be painted orange, and green, or maybe even green and yellow, never saw any logos on her. Started out as a high hood gp 9 that was chopped down.

And now that I think about it, and checked out where Ashley is, she is probably headed to Waterloo In, where MCM has a recycling yard.

You wouldn't route anything to Waterloo by way of Ashley and I don't believe there are any side tracks of any kind in Waterloo, just the large elevator a few miles east of town. Likely this is going to stay on the Indiana Northeastern.

Well as I dont know where these towns are, and I am to tired to look them up, I seen this unit, deadheading home from Chicago from 69 today, near Garrett. I would guess on the INER.

Why were you on Interstate 69 deadheading from Chicago to Willard? What route do you take? I'm guessing you took 80/90 to 69 then went south and took a US highway the rest of the way? Or was the driver lost? Which wouldn't surprise me at all. We had a crew "leave" Chicago. They fell asleep and woke up 3 hours later, and were still in Chicago!

CSX did a mass evacuation of crews today. Got a Great lakes charter bus, and took 6 Garrett, crews and 12 willard crews home. Actually ran 79th street all the way across the city, to 94 then to the sky way, and 90/80 to 69 kicked people off the bus at speed, and headed back south on 69 to 469? to 30 to Rt 4 to Attica to Willard. All told on duty at 10 marked off at 16:47.

Wow, quite interesting! I know when the weather is bad we'll get put on Amtrak out of Chicago down to Champaign and then taxi the rest of the way (only ~15 miles) THANK GOD!! Never heard of mass dead-heading like that though! Cool! (and smart!)

I see a note along with that picture that says Former CNW GP7R stored for private owner. Where abouts would this be stored, because from what i see in the background, there is also MCM management semi trailers sitting. Any demolition work coming up in that area?

over the past couple of weeks they have been loading scrap steel/iron, here into NS gons with a boom truck and magnet, there is a company to the east of were the unit is sitting, but i've never paid attention who it is, and the unit is at the end of track in that siding with cars in front of it....the location of the unit is 500 ft. east of I-69 and IND. 4

MCM is the operators of the new Recycling plant in Waterloo, Indiana. Until the new switch & building is erected they are trucking the shredded steel from Waterloo to Ashley where it is shipped out by rail. Once the Switch & rail is installed in Waterloo that engine will be based @ Waterloo, Indiana. This plant is located just south of the NS & next to I 69. They are currently buying scrap @ $100/ton. This plant can shred & sort a complete car in 45 seconds

Well things have not worked well for MCM. Word is the another company has purchased the Waterloo IN Facility and are doing a major over haul on the facility, This is to increase the processing capability. the shreadder is being reworked as well. The dirt work has began as well to allow for rail service. I have and can find no info as to who is doing this. It would not suprise me if it was Omnisource.. I noticed that they are also removing equipment from the Sturgis MI facility

When Gordy operated MSO the scrap yard was his largest customer shipping 20-30 cars per week. Shortly after he sold MSO shipments from the Sturgis scrap yard decreased. One thing that short lines operators tell me is their business is very dependent on good relationships and competitive pricing. Maybe something happened with one of the two with the short line company :?

While it is true the MSO lost the Sturgis scrap business shortly after takeover due to a dispute on rates, the MSO did regain the business and "lost" it not due to poor service but to the company filing bankruptcy and closing the plant down. The MSO has been in business for years and I don't think poor service would allow that to happen.
